Introduction

We must take advantage of the current period of peace between Great Britain and France to strengthen our defences and keep Montréal safe. It won’t be easy: our wooden palisades are strong enough to protect the town from the Iroquois, but they won’t stand up to light artillery if the British from the Thirteen Colonies attack! You have to consider the financial resources and time available and help me make the right choices.

Building the wall

Start by choosing your materials. What should the wall around the town be made of?

  • Wood (Time : 2; Money : 2)
  • Stone (Time : 3; Money : 3)
  • Concrete
Hmm. I don’t know this material. It seems very strong! But it would cost too much to invent it. Choose something else.

Then choose your workers. Who would be best at building the fortifications?

  • Settlers (Time : 3; Money : 1)
  • Carpenters (Time : 1; Money : 1)
  • Masons and soldiers (Time : 1; Money : 2)

Locating the gates

Now that we have a wall around the town, we need openings to get in and out. How many gates should there be in the fortifications?

  • 0
Think about it! People could starve if they can’t get out of the town to get supplies. We need at least a few gates to allow and control traffic in and out.
  • 8 (Time : 1; Money : 1)
  • 12 (Time : 3; Money : 3)

Where should the gates be located in the wall?

  • Mostly on the river side (south) (Time : 0; Money : 0)
  • Mostly on the land side (north) (Time : 0; Money : 0)

Improving the town’s defences

The town is now surrounded by a strong wall. Will that be enough to keep our enemies out? Maybe we need a ditch around the fortifications ...

  • Dig a ditch (Time : 2; Money : 2)
  • Don’t dig a ditch (Time : 0; Money : 0)

The town was here long before the fortifications started going up. It grew one street at a time, so the streets aren’t always straight, and most of all they aren’t lined up with the new fortifications. Should we straighten the streets?

  • Straighten the streets (Time : 1; Money : 1)
  • Don’t straighten the streets (Time : 0; Money : 0)

Houses are vital targets in an attack: by destroying people’s homes, the enemy destabilizes the whole town. Do you think it would be a good idea to camouflage the house roofs to make them harder to identify and attack?

  • Camouflage the roofs (Time : 3; Money : 3)
  • Don’t camouflage the roofs (Time : 0; Money : 0)

Conclusion positive

Congratulations, my friend!

We managed to strengthen the town’s defences.

It’s true that a stone wall, built by skilled masons, is much stronger than the wooden palisade that protected the town before.

And since people have to get in and out of the town, eight gates, mainly on the river side, allow controlled access and are easy to defend.

The ditch is an additional obstacle for any enemy, and the straight streets make it easier for people to get around and improve access to the new gates. As for the roofs ... there’s no point in camouflaging them. Our enemies can’t fly over the town and see them from above, after all!

Conclusion négative

Oh, no!

Our defences weren’t strong enough to protect Montréal from the British.

Épuisement des ressources

Drat!

The King won’t give us any more important projects, now! We used up all his resources but didn’t even finish the fortifications. The town won’t be able to defend itself properly if the British attack.

Prove to the King that you deserve his confidence, by starting over and planning the town’s defences properly.

Be careful and keep an eye on how much time and money you spend.
